About us
Welcome to the newly redesigneed and repurposed website for Aquaterra Publishing. We are a small business established to promote the work of photographer and author Nigel Hicks. We do this by publishing both books and photographic prints of his work.
We’re based in Devon, southwest England, and to date we’ve concentrated on publishing books by him about this region of the UK. These are mostly very photography-led books that each focus on one county or part of the southwest. There is also one book, Wild Southwest, that showcases the wildlife and natural landscapes of the whole of southwest England.
In addition, we also promote some of the books that Nigel has had produced by other publishers. Although he has had work published by a number of outlets, on this site we’ve chosen to concentrate on those he’s done in collaboration with Oxford-based publisher John Beaufoy Publishing. These books concentrate solely on the Philippines, and cover a mix of travel and nature photography and writing.
Almost all the books listed on this site are available for purchase through most bookshops, both high street and online. They can also be bought from us. Although this site does not have an online shop itself, if you select to buy one here you’ll be directed through to the shop on our sister site www.nigelhicks.com, where you’ll be able to complete the purchase.
In terms of photographic prints, we’re launching this site with a small select group of images, which will be added to in due course. This initial batch represents mainly landscape photography across southwest England, though more global scenes will be included in subsequent batches. The aim is to promote the natural beauty of this planet, wherever it may be, through Nigel’s photography.

About Nigel Hicks
Despite being originally trained to PhD level as a biologist, Nigel has been a photographer and author for over 30 years, concentrating in the fields of tourism, ecotourism and nature photography/writing.
Although he has been based in Devon, southwest England, for much of his career, in the early years he worked out of Hong Kong, shooting across much of the Far East for a range of publishers and agencies. To this day, he retains a special interest in East Asia, though in recent times his work in this area has come to focus increasingly on the Philippines. This is a country that Nigel feels is hugely neglected, despite having much beauty and a vast range of wildlife that is utterly unique.
His work has appeared in a vast range of magazines and newspapers, and the long list of books that bear his name include the likes of Double Vision, The Photographer’s Guide to Light, The Digital SLR Bible, Wild China, The National Parks and Other Wild Places of the Philippines, Wild Southwest, Wild Philippines, Journey through the Philippines, Beautiful Cornwall and Beautiful Devon. He has also worked extensively with Dorling Kindersley on their Eyewitness Travel Guides, and with the USA’s National Geographic Image Collection.
Nigel has also been awarded a Fellowship with the British Institute of Professional Photography, the highest qualification in what is one of the UK’s leading professional photography bodies.
