This book is a series of vibrant photo essays covering a region that, though always historically thought of as Somerset, today actually consists of three counties: Somerset, North Somerset and Bath and North-east Somerset. In addition, this book includes its close neighbour, the great city of Bristol, very much the urban hub of this region.

Though often under-rated as a place of great beauty, this region nevertheless includes some hugely scenic areas, and a few of the UK’s most famous tourism hotspots.

This book’s photographic journey takes in all those well-known locations, from the hills, valleys and coast of Exmoor National Park to the elegant Georgian streets and buildings of the city of Bath. Quite apart from these two famous locations, there is also the ecclesiastical beauty of Wells and the stunning cliffs of nearby Cheddar Gorge.

Then there are the many lesser known places, such as the marshland nature reserves that characterise the Somerset Levels, the rolling limestone hills of the Mendips and the massif of the Quantock Hills.

In Bristol, much of what there is to photograph centres around the old docks area, now very much a restaurant and yachting zone. There are also such famous locations as Brunel’s steamship SS Great Britain and his Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Finally, a few annual events are covered, most especially the mighty Bridgwater Carnival, a stupendous festival of light and colour held through the streets of this town every November.

For a region generally not recognised for its beauty and places of interest, this book really showcases much that ‘greater’ Somerset has to offer.
