About Wild Southwest
This beautiful book, Wild Southwest, sets out to capture the natural landscapes of England’s southwest, along with much of the region’s plant and animal wildlife. Naturally, in a book of 160 pages, it’s impossible to cover absolutely everything – the region’s natural diversity is far too great – but Nigel has managed to home in on much that is important, most especially:
A range of representative landscapes and habitats, including the most important and most beautiful coastal, moorland, woodland, heathland and marshland places;
A cross-section of the southwest’s representative and most important plant species, ranging from those that are hugely common and well-known through to rarer and less easily recognised examples. Common examples include true heather (or ling) and daffodil, while rarer plants include white rock rose, bog asphodel and several species of orchid.
Similary, a cross-section of common and rarer animals can be found in the pages of this book, from the basking shark (Britain’s largest fish), through the otter, badger and red deer, down to the peacock butterfly and the sand lizard.
Wild Southwest‘s chapters kick off with two that summarise the region’s landscapes and habitats, plus the plant and animal wildlife. Successive chapters then concentrate on one particular region or protected area that include:
The chalk grasslands and acidic heaths of Dorset;
The high hills, deep valleys and rugged coastline of Exmoor National Park;
The marshes of the Somerset Levels;
The limestone hills of the Mendips;
The desolate moors and ancient woodlands of Dartmoor National Park;
The cliffs, beaches and estuaries of coastline of Devon and Cornwall;
The magnificent and remote archipelago that is the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall and surrounded by the Atlantic.
