Blue Skies Guide to the Philippines
A travel guide to this Southeast Asian archipelago, focussing on the natural world

About Blue Skies Guide to the Philippines
This handy little travel guide to the Philippines has been put together by Nigel Hicks, building upon more than 20 years’ experience of travelling and working in the Philippines. Whilst it covers some of the country’s main and most popular urban areas, much of the book concentrates on what the visitor might find in the natural world.
Of course the book wouldn’t be complete without the Philippines’ most popular beaches, so these are covered here. But a main feature of the beach coverage hinges around the scuba diving that might be possible nearby. The aim is to show what stunning examples of marine wildlife might be found just a short boat ride away from the beach. This includes the fantastic corals, some of the many colourful reef fish, or the occasional restless shark or whale shark. Dolphin-watching is also covered.
On land, the book introduces some of the mangrove forests that can be visited, as well as hiking trails in the forests of some of the country’s most well-known mountains. The latter include Mts Pulag and Apo, the latter the country’s highest mountain. A few of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes are also introduced, including Mts Mayon, Bulusan, Pinatubo and Taal. Although hiking in these places is quite restricted due to the danger, they are definitely worth visiting.
This is a beautiful little guide book that approaches the Philippines from a rather different angle, concentrating as it does on the natural world. For anyone who wants to escape the city, this is the ideal little guide.
