Exploring the Philippines takes the reader almost quite literally on a journey through this country, visiting 30 of its most famous and/or most beautiful sights, travelling from north to south.

Nigel’s entertaining and informative text, richly illustrated with his stunning photography, brings to life all these places. These range from the urban centres of Metro Manila and Cebu City to many of the islands’ beach resorts, historic sites and forest-clad mountains.

Starting in the far north of Luzon, the country’s largest island, the book’s journey starts at the beaches of Pagudpud, before moving southwards to the historic Spanish town of Vigan. The tour continues southwards, alternating between the coast and the high mountains of Luzon’s Cordillera, before then passing through Metro Manila, the nation’s capital. The far south of Luzon then includes the volcanoes of Taal and Mayon, as well as the wonderful whale shark-watching opportunities at the town of Donsol.

We then move into the wild areas of Mindoro and Palawan, rugged islands in the west of the Philippines. Here we cover such places as the scuba diving and beach centre at Puerto Galera, as well the stunningly beautiful El Nido, the tiny coral islands of Honda Bay and the forested Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

Continuing southwards brings us into the Visayas, the fractured mass of islands that make up the Philippines’ central southern region. Leading the way here is the incredible beach island of Boracay, arguably the country’s most popular destination. This is followed by the cities of Iloilo and Cebu City, before we move onwards to some remote islands, those of Guimaras, Bantayan and Malapascua. Our last stops in the Visayas take in the area around the city of Dumaguete, plus the beautiful island of Siquijor. Finally we arrive in Bohol, well known for its southwestern beaches and coral reefs, and inland for its hills and forests.

The last section covers Mindanao, the Philippines’ southernmost main island. Here we visit the northern islands of Siargao – arguably the country’s most popular surfing centre – and the quiet volcano-dominated Camiguin. Further south we come to the cities of Davao and Zamboanga, the former the region’s major city and starting point for hiking trips into nearby forested mountains.

We have reached our final destination.
